One Day in Brooklyn Itinerary: Best Things to Do, Eat & See
Brooklyn ended up being one of my favorite parts of our NYC trip. Compared to Manhattan, the pace felt a little slower, the neighborhoods were more relaxed, and I loved spending the day just walking around exploring different streets, coffee shops, bookstores, and the waterfront area.
If you only have one day in Brooklyn, I think the best way to do it is by combining some of the classic first-time spots like the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO, and Brooklyn Heights with a few trendier areas like Williamsburg. This gives you a good mix of iconic NYC views, local neighborhoods, and great food.
This one day in Brooklyn itinerary is based partly on what I personally did during my NYC trip, along with additional places I researched while planning. It’s designed for first-time visitors who want to see some of the best parts of Brooklyn without trying to cram too much into one day.

One Day in Brooklyn Itinerary
Morning: Walk the Brooklyn Bridge
I think walking the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the best ways to start your one day in Brooklyn itinerary.
We started on the Manhattan side and walked toward Brooklyn, which is what I would recommend doing. You get amazing skyline views the entire walk behind you which makes for a great background for photos.
The walk itself only takes about 20 to 30 minutes without stopping, but realistically you will probably spend closer to 45 minutes to an hour because you will want to stop for photos.
One thing I would definitely recommend is going earlier in the morning if possible. We didn’t go super early, and it was already getting crowded. The earlier you go, the more enjoyable the experience will probably be.
A few things worth knowing before you go:
- The pedestrian walkway is separated from bikes (the bike path is on the lower bridge)
- Wear comfortable shoes because you will be walking a lot the rest of the day too (I wore these Hokas and love them!)

Late Morning: Explore DUMBO
Once you finish crossing the bridge, you will end up in DUMBO, which is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Brooklyn for first-time visitors.
DUMBO stands for “Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass,” and it’s known for its cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and photo spots.
Even though it’s touristy, I still thought it was worth visiting because the views are good.
Washington Street (Manhattan Bridge Photo Spot)
This is the classic Brooklyn photo spot where you can see the Manhattan Bridge perfectly framed between the buildings.
It does get crowded, so just expect that going in. It’s still worth walking through because it’s one of the most recognizable spots in Brooklyn.
➡️ If you are planning your first trip to the city, my 3-Day NYC Itinerary breaks down exactly how I spent my time exploring New York and what I recommend prioritizing.
Time Out Market New York
If you need a quick snack, bathroom break, or just want somewhere indoors for a few minutes, Time Out Market is a good stop while exploring DUMBO.
There are multiple food vendors inside, rooftop seating, and really nice views overlooking the water.
Even if you don’t eat here, I think it’s worth going up to the rooftop for the skyline views.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
One of my favorite parts of this area was just walking along the waterfront.
Brooklyn Bridge Park has some of the best skyline views in NYC. It feels much calmer compared to Manhattan, and there are plenty of places to sit and take a break for a bit.
If the weather is nice, this is a really good area to slow down and enjoy the views for a while.
Late Morning: Brooklyn Heights Promenade
After exploring DUMBO, I would highly recommend walking over to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade.
This ended up being one of my favorite parts of Brooklyn!
The promenade runs above the waterfront and gives you incredible views of Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Midday: Explore Local Shops & Bookstores
One of my favorite things to do in NYC is walk around neighborhoods and stop into places that catch my eye, and Brooklyn is perfect for that.
The streets are very walkable and lined with independent shops, bookstores, cafes, and restaurants.
Books Are Magic
We stopped at Books Are Magic, and I absolutely loved it.
It’s a really cute independent bookstore with a great selection of books. If you like bookstores, I definitely think it’s worth stopping in.
McNally Jackson Books in downtown Brooklyn is another great bookstore option!

Lunch at Taku Sando
For lunch, we went to Taku Sando.
They serve Japanese-style sandwiches, and we actually first tried them while visiting Kyoto, Japan. Once I realized they had a Brooklyn location, I knew we had to go.
It ended up being just as good as we remembered.
I got the Wagyu sandwich, which is only available during certain times, and it was delicious. If it’s available when you visit, I would definitely recommend trying it.
The sandwiches are pretty filling, and it worked well as a midday break after walking around all morning.
Coffee Stop at Rhythm Zero
After lunch, we grabbed coffee at Rhythm Zero, which is nearby.
This ended up being one of my favorite coffee shops from our NYC trip.
I got the iced pear brown sugar latte, and it was so good. It was different without feeling overly sweet, and I still think about it honestly 😂. I have also heard great things about their matcha.
If you like specialty coffee shops, Brooklyn has so many good ones, and this was definitely one of my favorites.

Afternoon: Head to Williamsburg
After lunch, I would spend the second half of your day in Williamsburg.
Williamsburg feels trendier and has a great variety of cafes, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife.
Domino Park
One of the best places to visit in Williamsburg is Domino Park.
This waterfront park has amazing skyline views looking back toward Manhattan, walking paths, seating areas, and lots of open space.
It’s a really good place to relax for a bit after walking around all day.
Around sunset especially, the views here are really nice.
Optional Dinner in Brooklyn
If you want to stay in Brooklyn into the evening, this is a great area to have dinner before heading back to Manhattan.
One of the most famous restaurants in Brooklyn is Peter Luger Steak House, which is known for its classic steakhouse experience.
If you want something more casual, Williamsburg also has tons of good restaurants, depending on what you’re looking for:
- Misi – very popular spot for Italian food
- L’industrie Pizzeria – highly recommended place to grab pizza!

How to Get Back to Manhattan from Brooklyn
At the end of the day, you can easily take the subway back into Manhattan.
One of the things I liked most about NYC is how easy it was to move between neighborhoods using public transportation. Even after spending the entire day in Brooklyn, getting back to our hotel in Manhattan wasn’t bad at all.
I would recommend using Google Maps for subway directions while in NYC.
Tips for Spending One Day in Brooklyn
- Start your day early to avoid crowds on the Brooklyn Bridge
- Wear comfortable walking shoes because you will easily walk 15,000–25,000 steps (I love these Hokas!)
- Don’t try to see every Brooklyn neighborhood in one day
- Prioritize DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights if it’s your first visit
- Bring a portable charger since you will probably use your phone a lot for maps and photos
Final Thoughts on Spending One Day in Brooklyn
If you only have one day in Brooklyn, I think combining DUMBO, Brooklyn Heights, and Williamsburg is a great way to structure your itinerary.
You get the classic skyline views and iconic spots, but you also get to experience neighborhoods that feel a little more local and relaxed compared to Manhattan.
For me, Brooklyn ended up being one of my favorite areas in NYC because it felt more relaxed while still having so much to do. Even just walking around and exploring different streets ended up being one of my favorite parts of the day.
