Osaka vs Kyoto: My Honest Take After Visiting Both
If you’re visiting Japan and only have time to stay overnight in one city, choosing between Osaka vs Kyoto can be tough. I remember spending so much time trying to figure out how to split our stay.
We ended up doing three nights in Kyoto and three nights in Osaka. Looking back, I probably would’ve spent more time in Kyoto, maybe four nights there and two in Osaka. But I’m still glad we stayed overnight in Osaka because seeing Dotonbori at night was such a fun experience!
Even though Osaka and Kyoto are only 30–45 minutes apart by train, they feel completely different. Osaka has the energy of a big city, while Kyoto feels more traditional and peaceful.
I loved walking through Kyoto’s old streets and temples during the day. It had such a special atmosphere! Osaka, on the other hand, was more about food, nightlife, and city energy.
Overall, Kyoto felt more like my style, but I don’t regret spending a few nights in Osaka. It really depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for.
Here is a breakdown to help you decide between the two, plus what to do, where to stay, and how to visit both if you have time.
➡️Quick Answer: If you’re short on time, I would pick Kyoto. I much preferred Kyoto over Osaka, but I do think Osaka at night (especially Dotonbori) is worth experiencing!

Osaka Overview
Osaka is a busy, modern city known for its food, shopping, and nightlife.
We stayed near Dotonbori, and it was a great area for restaurants and exploring at night. The neon signs along the canal, the street food stalls, and the lively energy at night made it one of my favorite areas in the city.
Osaka has a faster pace than Kyoto and feels more urban. If you like street food, bright city streets, and a lively atmosphere, Osaka is a good fit.

Kyoto Overview
Kyoto is known for temples, shrines, bamboo forests, tea houses, and historic streets. It’s quieter than Osaka but still busy in the main tourist areas.
There is more to do during the day, and it’s better for sightseeing and photography. Some of my favorite spots were Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
I also really liked walking around Higashiyama Ward in the evening. It’s one of the most beautiful areas in Kyoto.
If you’re visiting Japan for the first time, Kyoto gives you that iconic, traditional experience that most people picture when they think of Japan.

Osaka vs Kyoto: How to Choose
Here is a breakdown to help you decide whether to stay in Osaka vs Kyoto:
- Best for Food: Osaka – It’s known as “Japan’s Kitchen” for a reason. Our favorite meal of our entire 2.5 weeks in Japan was at Wagyu Idaten in Osaka. But Kyoto was a close second (maybe even tied) with Wagyu Ramen Syomon. I would say Osaka has more variety when it comes to casual food options.
- Best for Traditional Culture: Kyoto – Kyoto definitely had more of the traditional culture feel with its temples, the Geisha district, and the historic streets (specifically Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka).
- Best for Nightlife: Osaka – I noticed Kyoto gets quiet earlier, while Osaka stays busy late into the night, especially in the Dotonbori area.
- Best for First-Time Visitors: Kyoto – Kyoto feels more iconic and has more historic areas to explore. It is the city that most people picture when they think of Japan’s temples, shrines, and traditional streets.
- Best for Scenery: Kyoto – The temples, bamboo forest, and mountain views make it more scenic.
- Best for Budget Travelers: Osaka – I noticed that hotels and food are generally cheaper in Osaka.
- Best Overall Experience: Kyoto – I enjoyed Kyoto more than Osaka due to the vibe, historic streets, and variety of things to do during the day.
If you’re visiting Japan for the first time and want something that feels more traditional, I would recommend staying in Kyoto over Osaka.

Best Things to Do in Osaka
If you plan to stay overnight in Osaka or visit as a day trip from Kyoto, here are some of the top things to do and see:
- Explore Dotonbori at Night: This was my favorite part of Osaka. The canal, neon lights, and street food make it one of the best places to walk around at night.
- Visit Osaka Castle: One of Osaka’s most iconic landmarks. The surrounding park and moats make it a great place for a scenic walk. Many say the inside isn’t worth the entrance fee since it is mostly a museum, but it is up to you if you want to check it out.
- Eat Osaka’s Famous Food: Don’t miss takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes).
- Universal Studios Japan: A fun day if you’re traveling with family or love theme parks.

Best Things to Do in Kyoto
Kyoto has a lot to offer during the day, especially if you’re interested in temples, historic streets, and traditional experiences.
Some of my favorite places to visit in Kyoto were:
- Fushimi Inari Taisha: One of Japan’s most famous spots with thousands of bright orange torii gates. We arrived around 11:00 AM and it was crowded, but after climbing partway up the mountain, it got much quieter. There’s no view at the top, just a shrine, and the full loop can take 2–3 hours. Bring water!
- Arashiyama: Beautiful area with the Bamboo Forest, Monkey Park, and river views.
- Kiyomizu-dera Temple: One of the most iconic temples in Kyoto. The wooden stage offers great views of the city, and it’s right by Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, two beautiful historic streets worth exploring.
- Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion): One of the most grand temples in Kyoto. The golden temple reflecting on the pond is stunning.

Where to Stay in Osaka
I recommend staying in or near Namba since it is close to Dotonbori and has tons of restaurants.
Here are a few places to stay in Osaka that I recommend:
- Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka – This is where we stayed, and I highly recommend it. Clean rooms, great amenities, and only a short walk from Dotonbori.
- Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka – Good location with nice city views.
- Hotel Nikko Osaka – Conveniently located above a subway station.
- Conrad Osaka – On the pricey side but has amazing skyline views.

Where to Stay in Kyoto
I recommend staying near Downtown Kyoto or Gion since they are walkable and close to public transport.
Here are a few places to stay in Kyoto that I recommend:
- Hyatt Place Kyoto – We stayed here for two nights and really liked it. Clean, comfortable, and right next to a subway station.
- Luck You Ryokan – We stayed here one night for the experience. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, but I came to the conclusion that ryokans aren’t my travel style. I prefer sleeping on traditional beds and modern bathrooms. Still, it was a great experience!
- Hotel Granvia Kyoto – Located inside Kyoto Station, super convenient if you’re taking any day trips from Kyoto using public transit.
- Hotel Okura Kyoto – Great location near Gion.

Should You Stay in Both Osaka & Kyoto?
If you have the time, I would recommend staying in both. Each city has something unique to offer!
If you have 4 nights or less, I would stay in Kyoto and just take a day trip to Osaka.
If you have more time, I recommend splitting it up, maybe 4 nights in Kyoto and 2 in Osaka. That way you can see Osaka’s nightlife without feeling rushed.
It’s super easy to take the train between the two cities (around 45 minutes one way), so you can’t go wrong either way since you can easily take day trips.
Final Thoughts on Osaka vs Kyoto
Both Osaka and Kyoto are worth visiting, and since they are so close, it’s easy to see both on the same trip.
If I had to choose one, I would stay in Kyoto. It has more to do during the day, a traditional feel, and beautiful historic streets. Osaka is fun for food and nightlife, but Kyoto felt more unique overall.
No matter which one you choose, you can easily visit the other by train, so you really can’t go wrong.
