Where to Stay in Chicago for First-Time Visitors (+ My Favorite Areas)
If you’re planning your first trip to Chicago, one of the first questions you wil probably have is where to stay. This is always the hardest part for me to figure out when visiting a new city!
The good news is that Chicago has a well-connected public transit system, so it’s fairly easy to get around. That said, it’s still worth putting some thought into which neighborhood you want to stay in so you’re close to the sights and restaurants that matter most to you.
If you have never been to Chicago before, figuring out the best area to stay can honestly feel a little overwhelming. That’s why I put together this guide to help you narrow down where to stay in Chicago for your trip.
I have been to Chicago several times over the years, mostly during the summer which is my favorite time to visit. We usually road trip from Indiana, and on past trips, we have stayed in both the Loop and River North.
These days I don’t prioritize staying next to the main tourist spots, but I know that first-time visitors usually want to be central so it’s easy to explore the city and see the main sights.
Personally, what I care about most when choosing where to stay in Chicago is:
- Walkability
- Being close to the lakefront (the Lakefront Trail is one of my favorite places to walk. It’s a long paved path along Lake Michigan with amazing skyline views) or the Chicago Riverwalk (another great area with beautiful architecture, restaurants, and places to sit along the water)
- And of course having great restaurants and coffee shops nearby!
In this guide, I break down the best neighborhoods to stay in Chicago for first-time visitors, including the pros and cons of each area, hotel recommendations, and what type of traveler each neighborhood is best for.

Where to Stay in Chicago
1. River North (Best Overall for First-Time Visitors)
If you are wondering where to stay in Chicago for the first time, River North is my top recommendation.
It is central, walkable, and close to everything. You can walk to the Chicago Riverwalk, Millennium Park, Michigan Avenue, and even the lakefront trail. The restaurant scene here is incredible, and there are endless coffee shops and restaurants.
We stayed at the Hyatt Place in River North and loved the location. We could walk everywhere. The only downside was that our city-view room was loud at night. If you stay here, I recommend requesting a higher floor or a room that does not face the main street.
Why River North is Great for First-Time Visitors
- Walking distance to major Chicago attractions
- Close to the Riverwalk
- Easy access to the lakefront
- Tons of dining options
- Busy and lively

The Loop is the core area of Chicago’s downtown and home to many of the city’s most famous sights. If your goal is to see Millennium Park, The Bean (aka Cloud Gate),or the Art Institute, staying in the Loop is a good choice.
That said, the Loop can feel more business-focused and quieter at night compared to River North.

3. Magnificent Mile (Best for Shopping)
If you want to stay somewhere central with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and major attractions, the Magnificent Mile is a great option. This area runs along Michigan Avenue and is one of the most well-known parts of Chicago.
Staying here puts you within walking distance of many popular sights, and it’s also very close to the Chicago Riverwalk and the lakefront. You can easily walk to Ohio Street Beach or the Lakefront Trail, which is one of my favorite places to walk in Chicago, especially in the summer.

4. West Loop (Best for Food Lovers)
If your trip revolves around restaurants, West Loop should be on your radar!
This area is known for Randolph Street, often called Restaurant Row. Some of Chicago’s best dining is here!
It is a little west of the main tourist area, but still close enough to reach downtown easily.

Lincoln Park is my personal favorite area of Chicago.
It is slightly north of downtown but still close to the lakefront trail. It feels residential and more relaxed. There are beautiful homes, great restaurants, and amazing coffee shops.
